Drones and Drifters uses aerial images collected by consumer level drones to measure tidal and river flows

The flow maps output from Drones and Drifters can be imported directly into GIS, and also provides a reliable and user-friendly data input for the LunaTide model.

Initial experiments used pumpkin drifters, one experiment being featured on Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet.

We now use more readily available biodegradable and melting drifters.

We are working to improve the detection and tracking algorithms and streamlining the work flow from data collection thorough to results.
